Trusted Partners: Gilling Dod

Continuing our Trusted Partner series, we spoke to Hannah Lee, Interior Designer of Gilling Dod, to discuss its innovative CAMHS project and what makes a good vinyl fabric.

What is Gilling Dod most known for, and what is your role in the team?

Gilling Dod is a renowned architectural and design practice known for innovative, sustainable designs within the healthcare sector. The firm is celebrated for its high-quality design, attention to detail, and commitment to creating functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client needs, with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency.

As an interior designer at Gilling Dod, my role involves shaping interior spaces that complement architectural designs. Collaborating with architects, clients, and specialists to ensure the spaces are functional, cohesive, and aligned with sustainability goals. My tasks include space planning, selecting materials, designing bespoke furniture, and enhancing the overall user experience.

Can you talk me through the CAMHS project? What was the idea for the project?

Three years ago, Britplas, Kingsway, and Gilling Dod collaborated to design the ideal bedroom for the Mental Health sector, specifically focusing on CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and neurodiversity/autism, which are key topics today. The goal was to inspire NHS trusts to adopt elements of the design in their own projects, using real-life feedback to ensure the design was both practical and supportive for those with lived experience.

Given the idea behind the project, were there any unique challenges in bringing it to life?

One of the key challenges was creating a space that was both safe and supportive for mental health, while avoiding the typical institutional designs often seen in such settings. The aim was to balance safety with comfort and functionality, ensuring the environment was conducive to wellbeing without compromising on aesthetic appeal or creating a clinical atmosphere.

Why did you choose Agua for the project and what did you require for the job?

We sought a vinyl fabric that stood out from the typical flat, clinical options commonly used in healthcare settings. Agua offers a diverse range of fabrics that not only meet healthcare standards but also provide a more residential, homely feel. For this project, we needed a fabric that would work for several key pieces, including a large circular seat, a window seat, and a headboard, all while maintaining both durability and a warm, inviting aesthetic.

What is your experience of working with Agua? How does the team typically help you achieve your goals?

Working with Agua was a great experience. Kristina, our representative, was fantastic and made the entire process seamless. She was incredibly helpful in handling our requests, ensuring everything went smoothly and efficiently.

Would you recommend Agua based on your experience?

I would highly recommend Agua, not only based on our positive experience but also because of the extensive range of fabrics they offer, specifically suited for healthcare environments. Their variety ensures both practicality and aesthetic appeal, making them a great choice for any project.
